section six in unit 2

section six in unit 2_5分词条

In this section, the author used several punctuations especially dashes in order to make emphasis or to further explain clearly or to say the contrary meanings, which also show [show]his attitude between the lines.

“For we know very wellI certainly knowthat if we’d been that lucky lady, we’d have worked our triumph into the conversation.” There are two dashes used in this sentence. Such expression is mainly to show the emphasis [on] the word “know”. Besides, the structure of this sentence used [use] should/would have done is the subjunctive mood. As a matter of fact, we are not that lucky lady and we don’t work our triumph into conversation.

In this section, the author indicates his viewpoint that he [she] won’t always talks about his success and won’t proclaim the glad tidings both local and long distance. That means he won’t showoff [show off] in this way. To this extent, I totally agree with him. I also will not do such kind of things. I will not detain the stranger in a street long enough to enlighten him with the news that I am the big potato while actually the stranger may just want to know time or direction.

In a word, showing off should be avoided under certain situations. Otherwise, others may consider you as an annoying person.
