希波克拉底是古希腊的一位医生，据说现代西方的医学科学体系就是从他开始。希波克拉底生于公元前460年，死于公元前370年，他建立了一种健康和疾病的平衡学说。他认为，人类正如宇宙中的其他部分一样，是由四种元素——土、气、水、火组成的，这四种元素和人体中的四种液体（黑胆汁、黄胆汁、血液和粘液）相对应。这四种液体处于平衡时，人就是健康的；失衡时，人就会得病。这种理论几乎一直延续到19世纪。
希波克拉底最为让人纪念的是不是上述医学，而是他留下的《希波克拉底誓言》。这个誓言总共只有五百多个字（按中文计），但是产生的影响却非常深远。几乎所有学医学的学生，入学的第一课就要学《希波克拉底誓言》，而且要求正式宣誓，可以说医学界的人没有不知道希波克拉底的。在其他领域里，如律师、证券商、会计师、审计师、评估师、推销员等等，都拿希波克拉底誓言作为行业道德的要求。这个誓言成为人类历史上影响最大的一个文件之一。
医神阿波罗，埃斯克雷彼斯及天地诸神为证，鄙人敬谨宣誓，愿以自身能判断力所及，遵守此约。凡授我艺者敬之如父母，作为终身同世伴侣，彼有急需我接济之。视彼儿女，犹我弟兄，如欲受业，当免费并无条件传授之。凡我所知无论口授书传俱传之吾子，吾师之子及发誓遵守此约之生徒，此外不传与他人。
我愿尽余之能力与判断力所及，遵守为病家谋利益之信条，并检束一切堕落及害人行为，我不得将危害药品给与他人，并不作此项之指导，虽然人请求亦必不与之。尤不为妇人施堕胎手术。我愿以此纯洁与神圣之精神终身执行我职务。凡患结石者，我不施手术，此则有待于专家为之。
无论至于何处，遇男或女，贵人及奴婢，我之唯一目的，为病家谋幸福，并检点吾身，不做各种害人及恶劣行为，尤不做诱奸之事。凡我所见所闻，无论有无业务关系，我认为应守秘密者，我愿保守秘密。倘使我严守上述誓言时，请求神只让我生命与医术能得无上光荣，我苟违誓，天地鬼神共殛之。
The Hippocratic Oath
Original, translated from Greek.
I swear by Æsculapius, Hygeia, and Panacea, and I take to witness all the gods, all the goddesses, to keep according to my ability and my judgement, the following Oath.
To consider dear to me as my parents him who taught me this art; to live in common with him and if necessary to share my goods with him; To look upon his children as my own brothers, to teach them this art if they so desire without fee or written promise; to impart to my sons and the sons of the master who taught me and the disciples who have enrolled themselves and have agreed to the rules of the profession, but to these alone the precepts and the instruction.
I will prescribe regimens for the good of my patients according to my ability and my judgment and never do harm to anyone.
To please no one will I prescribe a deadly drug nor give advice which may cause his death.
Nor will I give a woman a pessary to procure abortion.
But I will preserve the purity of my life and my art.
I will not cut for stone, even for patients in whom the disease is manifest; I will leave this operation to be performed by practitioners, specialists in this art.
In every house where I come I will enter only for the good of my patients, keeping myself far from all intentional ill-doing and all seduction and especially from the pleasures of love with women or with men, be they free or slaves.
All that may come to my knowledge in the exercise of my profession or in daily commerce with men, which ought not to be spread abroad, I will keep secret and will never reveal.
If I keep this oath faithfully, may I enjoy my life and practice my art, respected by all men and in all times; but if I swerve from it or violate it, may the reverse be my lot.
简短而洗炼的的誓言，向世人公示了四条戒律：
- 对知识传授者心存感激；
- 为服务对象谋利益，做自己有能力做的事；
- 绝不利用职业便利做缺德乃至违法的事情；
- 严格保守秘密，即尊重个人隐私、谨护商业秘密。
