BurundiwasapartofGermanEastAfricafrom1890untiltheBelgiansoccupieditin1916,BurundibecamepartofBelgiancontrolledtrustterritoryofRuanda-Urundi.Burundibecameanautonomousterritoryin1961,gainedindependenceasanindependentkingdomin1962,andfinallybecamearepublicin1966.
DuringGermantimes,theGermanEastAfricanrupiecirculateduntil1916.AfterBelgium’soccupationofBurundi,theBelgianCongofranccirculatedthroughoutBurundi.TheBelgianterritoriesofCongo,RwandaandBurundiallusedthesamecurrencyuntil1960whenCongoleftthecurrencyunionatwhichtimetheBanqued’EmissionduRwandaetduBurundiwasestablishedtoissuebanknotes.TheRwanda-BurundifrancwasestablishedatparwiththeBelgianfranc.In1964theBanqueduRoyaumeduBurundiwasestablishedandthenewKingdomofBurundibeganissuingitsownfrancnotes.In1966theroleofissuingthenationalcurrencywastakenoverbytheBanquedelaRepubliqueduBurundi,whohasheldthatresponsibilitysince.
TheBurundifrancisdividedinto100centimesalthoughsincethecurrenciesinceptionin1964nocoinhavebeenissuedincentimesduetothelowvalue.Thecurrency’sISO4217codeisBIF,inBurundipricesarewrittenusing“FBu”aftertheamounti.e.100FBuis100francs.
