哈吉斯生于加拿大，曾到英国学过时装摄影，学不成便回加拿大学电影。其间写过一些小戏剧，系列剧“Thirty Something”为他带来艾美奖，也使他有机会发展自己的风格（黑暗，复杂和模糊）的作品。他的电影导演处女作诞生于1996年，讲的是1959年4名俄罗斯少年尝试组建苏联第一支摇滚乐队的故事。时隔8年，哈吉斯写了第二部电影——《百万宝贝》，由此他与克林特·伊斯特伍德成了好朋友，并拿下了当年奥斯卡的最佳编剧。2005年，哈吉斯展现了过人的导演才华，他执导兼编剧的《撞车》获得78届奥斯卡6项提名，把他推向前所未有的高峰。
