捷氏百货公司觊觎柯氏百货，企图将之并购，柯氏百货趁著感恩节游行活动，放手一搏，希望能够起死回生，然而他们所聘雇的圣诞老人却肆意的当众酗酒，激怒了现场一位以真实圣诞老人自居的克里斯先生，柯式公司的企划主任桃莉华克当机立断，将他解雇，而请求克里斯接替这个工作，克里斯很高兴的接受了，而且不负所望，成功的吸引了大批的顾客，使得公司的业绩大幅上扬。捷氏公司利诱克里斯不成，遂使出阴险的手段，企图陷害他。
华克小姐是一位美貌又有才乾的女强人，但是个性忧郁、谨慎、悲观，凡是强调相信事实，以为相信神话与幻想只会让自己不快乐，她又用这个理念去教育她的女儿苏珊，告诉她圣诞老人是用钱雇来的，事实上并不存在，所以虽然一手安排节庆活动，但是母女二人却一点也得不到快乐。她们的好朋友布莱恩律师一心要改变她们的观念，却不得其门而入。
捷式公司陷害克里斯，散播谣言说他是一个精神病患，警察将他逮捕，关在贝勒福精神病院，在调查庭的进行过程中，布莱恩成功的利用一张一元美钞上所印的”INGODWETRUST”说服法官：正如上帝也无法用肉眼看见，圣诞老人也是肉眼所看不见的，但却是百姓心中一个不可或缺的寄托。法庭宣判克里斯无罪，这一场官司也就在一声声的“圣诞快乐”声中圆满落幕。而华克母女也和布莱恩一起渡过一个快乐的圣诞节。
