一条新修的铁路要从凯瑟琳·巴洛家的农场经过，但巴洛一家并不愿意接受铁路建筑商的条件迁走农场，于是农场受到了建筑商所雇用的歹徒的威胁。凯瑟琳是一个有些书呆子气的女老师，她认识一个名叫席利的小混混，并认为他是西部最令迷人的火枪手。最终，她的父亲被修铁路的大资本家派来的持枪歹徒杀害，凯瑟琳悲愤不已，她发誓要和他们血战到底。她决定自己成立一个帮派，为父亲报仇。这是一个稀奇古怪的帮派，有小混混、驯马人、流浪歌手和席利这个超级离谱的枪手。最终，他们报仇成功，并且莫名其妙地成为了当地的英雄人物。

这部影片由艾略特·西尔维斯坦执导。影片采取了传统的西部片的模式：封闭的小镇，遭到歹徒的袭击；但这次拯救众人的英雄不是一个正义感十足的硬汉，而是一个醉醺醺、有些疯疯癫癫的赖汉，而且还是由一个虽然漂亮但是书呆子气十足的女教师领导的；复仇和拯救的动作场面也是错漏百出，喜剧感十足。影片的女主角由曾两次获得奥斯卡最佳女演员奖的简·方达扮演，而那个疯癫的火枪手则由硬派小生李·马文扮演，两位一贯以正剧形象的影星在影片的喜剧场面中表现得游刃有余。两位著名的歌星Nat King Cole 和Stubby Kaye也在影片中扮演了角色，并演唱了数首插曲。
